"Cinema is an industry that reflects the state of society," Horbunov on his own projects, hate and the great war

The third episode of the project, in which Ukrainian film and television stars share their professional experience, open up the backstage of their profession and tell things that usually remain behind the scenes, is now available on Kyivstar TV. This time, the guest was Yuriy Gorbunov, a 1+1 Ukraine TV presenter, producer and actor.

In the episode, Gorbunov told us the secret behind the enormous popularity of all parts of Crazy Wedding and Crazy Neighbours. This is confirmed by the indisputable fact that Crazy Neighbours topped the TOP of the most popular Ukrainian TV series on Kyivstar TV in 2023 by the number of views. 

"It grew up on the basis of three Crazy Wedding films. When we realised that this universe of our favourite characters should live on, but in the feature film we had to give it a break, because there still needs to be some logic in the development of these characters' relationships, in the series they can absolutely live on, have the problems they struggle with, get out of the situations they find themselves in. And even if we look ahead a little bit, our authors' imagination will be enough for at least 5 more seasons of Crazy Neighbours. So now it's a matter of how actively the audience will watch it now, how ready they are to accept it, because humour is a specific topic, although one that everyone loves and looks forward to, but sometimes they can say that it's "not the right time," says Yuriy Gorbunov. 

Together with the project's host Volodymyr Rabchun, they talked about trends in Ukrainian cinema and why Ukrainian audiences need comedy now.

"People need comedy as a life-saving pill to balance their own consciousness," said Yuriy Gorbunov. 

He also explained what the job of a film producer is and advised what aspiring filmmakers should do now. 

"A producer has, of course, task No. 1 - to find funds. But not only do you need to find money, you need to find a team of like-minded people and a team of people who will believe in what you are doing, because the talent of a producer is that you have to convince people of your idea, and the idea itself does not exist yet. It's not a product that you've brought. It's not a tablet or a smartphone. You're talking about something that doesn't exist yet," said Yuriy Horbunov.
