“Yakov's Century” is a 4-episode historical drama based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Volodymyr Lys.
It is a deeply personal story that simultaneously reflects the 20th century as it unfolded on the territory of Ukraine. The plot revolves around Yakov Mekh, an elderly man from Volyn, whose life story has become a chronicle of an entire era.
An unexpected visitor, a stranger named Olena, comes to see old Yakov. Her arrival forces him to recall his distant youth, the women he loved — Ulyana and Zosya — and the Second World War. Before the viewer’s eyes, a story gradually unfolds — a story of great love, betrayal, war, and family memory passed down through generations.
Each of the four episodes tells an important story from Yakov’s life. In the first episode, he remembers his youth, his love for Ulyana — who was married off to another man — and his enlistment in the Polish army. The second episode focuses on his encounter with Zosya, a Polish noblewoman, and his feelings for her. The third episode shifts to the present day: Yakov’s great-grandson is preparing to volunteer for the war that Russia has launched against Ukraine. Yakov gives him a talisman that once saved his life during World War II. In the final episode of the miniseries, Yakov saves Olena from a bandit, remembers events from 1945, and reflects on the history of Ukraine over the past 100 years.
