Viggo Mortensen in Ukraine: Mykolaichuk OPEN Film Festival announces the opening film
The opening film was directed by a Hollywood star, and the festival will close with a Ukrainian film
This year, the Mykolaychuk OPEN festival will be held in Chernivtsi for the third time. The film that will open the event is the directorial work of Hollywood actor Viggo Mortensen, known to Ukrainian audiences as Aragorn from The Lord of the Rings. In the western The Dead Don't Hurt, he acted as a director, actor, screenwriter and producer. The screening will take place on 16 June after the opening ceremony.
The film is set in the 1860s in the United States. The fierce Vivien Le Coady embarks on a journey with Danish migrant Holger Olsen to build a life together in a dusty Nevada town. The Civil War is in full swing, so the man goes to fight for the Army of the North (also known as the Union). Now his beloved has to defend herself, which is not easy in a town controlled by cruel and spoilt men.
The female lead is played by Luxembourg actress Vicky Krieps, known for her roles in the films Corset and Phantom Thread, which received six Oscar nominations. The film also stars Solly MacLeod (House of the Dragon), Garrett Dillagan (12 Years a Slave), Danny Huston (The Aviator) and others.
