On January 28, 2020, a landmark event will take place on the Ukrainian television market: the largest Ukrainian media holdings - 1+1 Media, StarLightMedia, "Media Group Ukraine" and Inter Media Group - will encode the satellite signal of their TV channels. This means that the most rated Ukrainian TV channels, including the TV channels of the 1+1 media group - 1+1, 2+2, TET, PLUSPLUS, Bigudi - will stop broadcasting in public.
We draw your attention to the fact that the disconnection of analog television, which was postponed from December 2019 to July 2020 in connection with the decision of the National Council of Ukraine on Television and Radio Broadcasting, is not related to the encoding of the satellite signal of TV channels!
Why do Ukrainian media groups encode the signal?
In addition to the fact that Ukrainian TV channels produce content independently, they buy films and series, rights to sports broadcasts, show formats , children's programs and other television products abroad at their own expense . By purchasing the rights to them , the channels must guarantee the rights holders compliance with the obligations they have assumed regarding its broadcast, including the obligation to broadcast this content exclusively in the broadcasting territory determined by the agreements and in the manner established by the agreements .
Unfortunately, the broadcasting of a television signal in an open format is an opportunity for its unauthorized reception and rebroadcast by pirates: receiving a television signal , they illegally offer it to subscribers for money, thus profiting from viewers and exposing them to the prospect of being without television at any moment . As a result, channels do not receive sufficient funds to create or purchase new quality content , and are also at risk of fines from rights holders, whose content due to broadcast on an open satellite could not be 100% protected from piracy . In addition, satellite coded abroad is a solution that countries came to many years ago, which made it possible to have a qualitative impact on the fight against pirates and had a significant impact on the development of the pay TV market.
Therefore, in order for Ukrainian television content to be at the level of foreign ones, and for the program offerings of Ukrainian TV channels to be quickly replenished with world novelties, satellite encoding is a logical phenomenon that benefits all participants, including viewers.
Most of the national TV channels are coded, but not all Ukrainian TV channels. The decision to encode its satellite signal is made by each TV channel at its own discretion. Public and some informational TV channels will remain in open access.
