The victory of heritage: "Scythian gold" will be exhibited at the exhibition "Treasures of Crimea. Return" exhibition before the de-occupation of the peninsula
On 5 July 2024, the exhibition "Treasures of Crimea. The Return". The partner of the event is the Institute of Public Communications.
The exhibition will become permanent in the Museum and will last until the final de-occupation of Crimea, after which the collection will be moved to the peninsula.
In June 2023, Ukraine won a historic victory in the international legal field: The Supreme Court of the Netherlands confirmed the decision of the courts of previous instances to return 565 items from the exhibition "Crimea: Gold and Secrets of the Black Sea", which were exhibited at the Allard Pearson Museum in Amsterdam. These are ancient Greek, ancient Roman, late Scythian, Sarmatian, Hun and Gothic artefacts found during the 19th-21st centuries during archaeological research in Crimea. In total, there are more than 2,000 items from the collections of four Crimean museums: The Central Museum of Tavrida, the Kerch Historical and Cultural Reserve, the Chersonesos Tavriya National Reserve, and the Bakhchisaray Historical and Cultural Reserve.
The transfer of the artefacts known as Scythian gold is a logical and fair conclusion to the long-running legal battle over ownership between Ukraine and museums located in Russia-controlled territory. The decision of the Dutch court confirms Ukraine's jurisdiction over Ukraine's Crimean cultural heritage, based on Ukraine's sovereign right to the territory of the Crimean peninsula, which is recognised internationally.
The event also marks the beginning of the return of all the illegally stolen Ukrainian cultural heritage that Russian museums have been seizing for centuries.
"Treasures of Crimea. The Return" is a powerful victory in the struggle for Ukraine's cultural heritage, a testament to our millennial history, which is revealed through the cultures of many peoples, and the establishment of the rule of law.
The exhibition will run until the de-occupation of Crimea. Until then, every visitor will have the opportunity to see unique artefacts and feel their belonging to a rich and ancient culture.
