TV viewing results in January 2023: how Ukrainians watched TV

 

The main event of Ukrainian television at the end of 2022 was the launch of TV channels 1+1 Ukraine and ICTV2, which will announce a powerful broadcasting network and will return favorite projects of Ukrainians to the air. At the same time, a new television season will start already in February-March, which will introduce viewers to new programs and a considerable amount of diverse content.

In general, the first month of 2023 was quite stable for Ukrainian television. Therefore, we summarize the results of TV viewing in January and tell which TV channels and products collected the highest shares according to the data of Kyivstar TV.

We remind you that the Nielsen panel, which before the full-scale war was engaged in TV measurements, is currently being updated, so the market continues to focus on viewing data from OTT platforms. In turn, Kyivstar TV provides relevant information for the formation of TV ratings of the independent agency BIG DATA UA.

TOP-20 TV channels in January

There were minor changes in the TOP-20 TV channels in January compared to December 2022. In particular, according to the results of the month, having increased by 1.1 pp, the Novy TV channel, which mainly broadcasts movie hits and entertainment programs, took the first position. TV channels of the 1+1 media group, having diversified their audience in connection with the appearance of 1+1 Ukraine, changed their positions in the rating. Thus, TV channel 1+1 Marathon took the third place, leaving other TV channels broadcasting "Edyny Novy" far behind. In turn, TET and 2+2 ended up on the fourth and fifth rungs of the rating, and the updated 1+1 Ukraine occupies a confident sixth rung. As for the dynamics of new TV channels in the TOP-20 - 1+1 Ukraine and ICTV2, their gradual growth is observed. The peak viewership of 1+1 Ukraine was 17.6% on January 1, and the largest share of ICTV-2 for January was 5.9% on January 9.

TV channels with a Russian-language track TV1000 Action (-0.4 pp) and TV1000 (+0.1 pp) continue to lose their audience evenly, from month to month.

Media groups and views

The largest number of TV channels included in the January rating are part of the 1+1 media group – 1+1 Marathon, TET, 2+2, 1+1 Ukraine, PLUSPLUS, KVARTAL TV, Paramount Comedy, and Bihudi. From StarLightMedia in the TOP-20 - TV channels Novy, STB, ICTV, ICTV2, and from Inter Media Group - only NTN.

At the same time, the leader in the rating of media groups remains the group 1+1 media, which in January collected a total of 32.8% of the share, adding 2.6 percentage points. in comparison with the previous month and thereby ensuring undisputed primacy. StarLightMedia was on the 2nd step with a 28.6% share and +2.6 pp. compared to December, and Inter Media Group ended the month in third position with a share of 2.4%, losing 0.5 p.p. from the December share.

Watching the telethon "The only news"

In January, there was a slight drop in interest in the Yedyni Novyni telethon (by -1.1 pp), which has been running continuously for more than 11 months. Thus, the total share of the main TV channels in the marathon was 12.2%. Traditionally, the most popular TV channel broadcasting the marathon is 1+1 Marathon with a gap of 1.5 times from ICTV.

Watching other news channels, which are not in the marathon, collects a small share of TV viewing, similar to previous months: TV channel 24 in January collected a share of 1.5%, "Pryamiy" - 0.6%, "Espresso" - 0.6%, and channel 5 - only 0.2%.

The most popular series on the Kyivstar TV platform

In January, Kyivstar TV users, traditionally, actively viewed serial content. Thus, the ICTV series "District with DVRZ" was included in the TOP-5 products of the month, followed by the legendary STB project "Catch Kaidash", the foreign series "The Secret of the Old Bridge", and the 5th place was taken by the project "House of Happiness" from the New Channel.

It is significant that in the category of series that users watched the longest, the multi-genre social special project "Live on" of the 1+1 media group, which is implemented in partnership with the Ukrainian public organization "Bezbarniernost", which works on the implementation of the National Mental Health Program, topped the rating and psychosocial support initiated by the First Lady of Ukraine Olena Zelenska. The program is aimed at providing free access to psychological care for all Ukrainians, removing any existing barriers, and is supported by the World Health Organization.

Kyivstar TV data reflect the audience's interest in one or another content and are formed based on the viewing of certain TV channels by all subscribers of the platform, that is, they are representative of the entire platform. Such data are valid and reliable by definition, since they cover all subscribers of the OTT platform, and not a small part of them.

Of course, the television panel should display the TV viewing data of the entire population with various types of reception, not only IPTV/OTT, but this is impossible now and until the complete restoration of the television panel. In addition, according to the results of a baseline study conducted in September 2022, IPTV/OTT coverage is 25.9% of households (cities with a population of 50,000+). Accordingly, the services of this type of reception are used by the paying population that regularly pays for TV services.
