The online course from 1+1 media school and UN Women in Ukraine has ended

In August-September, on the basis of 1+1 media school – an educational project of the 1+1 media group – an online course on creating gender-sensitive content in the media was held for representatives of regional mass media. The training was implemented within the project of the UN Women in Ukraine structure "Gender equality in the processes of decentralization and reform of the law enforcement system" funded by the Danish government. The project is aimed at improving the quality of content and correct coverage of gender-sensitive topics by regional media.

The course lasted almost three weeks, it was attended by 33 participants from different regions of Ukraine.

The coaching staff of the course included representatives of 1+1 media, as well as experts from various Ukrainian media. Marichka Padalko became the mentor of the program, the presenter of TSN and the telethon Edyni news from 1+1. The teaching team was also joined by the presenters of "pluses" Lyudmila Barbir , Yehor Gordeev and Svyatoslav Grynchuk , who gave representatives of regional mass media important advice on the transformation of content in new realities, talked about fact-checking and finding heroes for stories. Also, during the course, teachers taught the principles and rules of gender-sensitive journalism, writing inclusive texts and the features of military gender-sensitive reporting.

Specialists in gender issues were involved in the program. In particular, Elizaveta Kuzmenko became the expert of the course - trainer on issues of gender equality and non-discrimination, head of the NGO "Women in the Media Association", member of the Journalistic Ethics Commission, consultant of media and gender projects of the Council of Europe in Ukraine, Coordinator of OSCE projects in Ukraine, International Media Support (IMS).

"Especially during the martial law in Ukraine, it is important to use the language of gender-sensitive journalism, to identify sexism and hate speech in media materials, to form and apply feminisms. This is what the 1+1 media school training program for regional media was aimed at. It is important that such a powerful national media does not stand aside from learning about those topics that may seem less important at first glance. Therefore, I, as a coach, thank you for the opportunity to be involved in an important cause," commented Elizaveta Kuzmenko.

In addition to the trainees who passed the preliminary competitive selection and got into the study group, all those willing could join the project, because recommendations for gender-sensitive content were distributed in the social networks of 1+1 media school and the course trainers, thus reaching the maximum audience.

"Frank communication on debatable and not always comfortable topics both with the younger generation of colleagues and with legendary personalities of the profession became for me not just a breath of fresh air, but a real inner emotional push. I am grateful to all the trainers for their conscientious preparation for classes and interesting cases that were cited as examples from their own experience - this was the most fascinating. Thank you to the entire team of 1+1 media school and all the co-curators of the course for this wonderful experience!”, – Anton Buynytskyi , a student of the course, shares his impressions of the course.
